Volunteering Open Morning

Volunteering with one of our teams offers first-hand insight into the work of one of the world's most notable sculptors and the chance to experience the day to day operation of an international arts organisation. As a charity, our volunteers help us to continue Henry Moore's mission to encourage public appreciation of the visual arts.

We are hoping to recruit new volunteers to support our staff teams in several areas of work at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, including in the Henry Moore Archive and collections, guided tours, and the gardens. We have several different opportunities available, to suit volunteers with different skills and levels of availability. For all volunteering roles, travel expenses up to £10 per day are available.

We will be holding an open morning for those interested in becoming a volunteer on Wednesday 4 March 2020. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please join us for refreshments and an informal chat with our staff members and current volunteers.

Please click here to register your interest. There is no charge to attend, but registering will allow us to gauge numbers more accurately.

Our volunteering opportunities

Volunteer Guides

Our dedicated team of Volunteer Guides lead tours for adult groups and school parties during the visitor season from Easter to late October. We are looking for new volunteers to join the team for our 2020 season.

The time commitment is flexible to accommodate your availability – anything from a couple of tours a month to a couple a week. Tours include the sculpture grounds, studios and gallery and usually take place over 2 hours in the mornings from 10am or early afternoons on Wednesdays to Fridays. The dates of tours are arranged in advance with individual Volunteer Guides on a one to one basis. Specific training will be provided about Henry Moore and his work.

The role requires:

  • An enjoyment in engaging with the public
  • An enthusiasm for the arts / education / history and heritage
  • An ability to relay information in an interesting and engaging manner to any age group
  • Confidence in talking to groups of people
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic
  • A good team player with a friendly manner

Henry Moore Studios & Gardens is also home to the Henry Moore Archive: housing extensive collections of documents, photographs, publications and ephemera relating to Henry Moore. If you have an eye for detail and an interest in photography, art books, letters and documents why not join our dedicated Archive team. We welcome volunteers who can commit to a half day or full day each week.

Digital Collections Volunteers

As part of our digital catalogue raisonné project, we are making the entire work of Moore available online for the first time. We are looking for help with this amazing project, based in the archives and offices at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens. Some computer skills would be helpful, although no expertise is required and we will train you in every aspect of the process. We are looking for help with the following tasks:

  • Sorting and labelling documents in preparation for digitisation using our office Canon scanners
  • Collecting basic information from scanned documents to make online access to our materials a more easy, logical and coherent experience.
