Re/Construct: Sculpting, the Origins of Objects with Emii Alrai

This session is suitable for children aged 5+ and families

Join Emii Alrai to explore the shaping and sculpting of stories and materials. Share personal histories, create vessels in clay and experiment with adding colour and different finishes. Come to understand the origins of objects and take away your own.

This workshop looks at how stories and personal experiences shape the art we make. Together, you'll talk about the power of storytelling and play with how stories shape your ideas. You'll also take inspiration from Moore's sculpture in our gardens. Looking at their different materials, sizes and the coloured patinas they are coated with.

Emii will show you how to work with clay, getting you started with coiling techniques and how to use small models, called maquettes, to build your ideas. She'll guide you through how to create different coating and finishes to apply to your artworks. Learn how to use ink mixing methods, create illusions with pigment, and create the oxidised blue-green known as verdigris.

About the Practitioner

Emii Alrai’s practice is informed by inherited nostalgia, geographical identity and post-colonial museum practices of collecting and displaying objects. Focusing on the ancient mythologies from the Middle East alongside personal oral histories, Alrai weaves together narratives by forging artefacts and visualising residues of cultural collision. Often working at large scale, she creates sculptural installations that recall museological displays and dioramas, natural landscapes and processes of decay and ruin.
