Redeveloping Sheep Field Barn Gallery, Learning and Engagement Space

Tuesday, 8 February 2022

Launching a competition for architects to reimagine our gallery space at our headquarters in Hertfordshire.

We are inviting architects to submit expressions of interest for the redevelopment of the Sheep Field Barn Gallery at the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, Hertfordshire to introduce learning and engagement facilities to the gallery and improve the existing display spaces.

Henry Moore was passionate about education and one of his motivations for establishing the Foundation was to continue his enthusiasm for sculpture and the arts. The Henry Moore Foundation’s education programme has developed substantially over the years, particularly given the relevance of Henry Moore’s work to the National Curriculum. With the arrival of our recently appointed Engagement Curator at the Studios & Gardens, we are keen to deepen our engagement with schools, special needs education students and young adults. A programme which is currently limited due the lack of suitable learning spaces at a time when demand is increasing.

“We are looking for a designer who will be excited by the rural nature of the Moore estate and who will work with us to find smart design solutions to our specific challenges. The buildings here are important, but Moore’s sculptures are more important, so too is the land in which they sit, a panorama in which colour is kept to a minimum so that Moore’s works can be positioned to emphasise their relationship to nature.”

Lesley Wake, Chief Operating Officer, Henry Moore Foundation
