Henry Moore Drawing Competition 2019

Join in with our celebration of drawing, enter your own artwork in our Drawing Competition.

As part of our 2019 season celebrating the art of drawing, we’re inviting visitors, local schools and anyone who loves to draw to enter a Henry Moore themed drawing competition.

Drawing was a constant throughout Moore’s life. He was a prolific and talented draughtsman, producing nearly 7500 drawings during his career. We would like to invite entries which reflect themes in Moore’s art. These are:

  • Reclining Figure
  • Mother and Child
  • Natural forms
  • Life Drawing

The competition opens on Wednesday 3 April and all entries must be received at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens by 5pm on 31 August.

All entries should be submitted on A4 paper or card and may feature any drawing media or technique, including: pencil, ink, biro, felt pen, charcoal, chalk, wax crayon, pastel etc. Coloured washes are permitted but the majority of the artwork submitted must be drawn not painted. Entries should include the following details: Name, age, contact details (email, postal address and phone number).

Drawings will be judged in three categories:

  • Primary: for children aged 11 and under, in primary or pre-school.
  • Secondary: for those aged 11 to 18 in secondary school or college.
  • Adult: for those aged over 18.

The judging panel will be led by our Head of Collections and Exhibitions, Sebastiano Barassi. Winners will be announced on the Henry Moore Foundation website and social media by the end of September. Winners and runners up will also be notified by email.

The winning entry and two runners up, in each category, will be exhibited in the Visitor Centre at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens during October as part of The Big Draw.

Winners will also receive a copy of our new publication Henry Moore Drawings: The Art of Seeing, a Henry Moore Friends membership and a selection of gifts from our shop. The runners up in each category will receive a copy of Henry Moore Drawings: The Art of Seeing.

I too would like to know how many entries are permitted, to each section and overall. and if it is preferred in Henry Moore's style rather than a like interest in the subject. Thank you, Sandra

Is the original artwork limited to A4 size or just the submitting?

1 May 2019 20:29

Hello, I'm from Poland. I would like to take part in this competition. I would like to know how many entries can I present, and how many themes should I choose? Does the entry have to be made in Henry Moore's style, or can I try with my own drawings inspired by his works? Thank You very much for your activity and answer. Kind regards, Maya

Hello Sarah, No, the work does not have to be from this year. However, it must be submitted as hard copy - not emailed - and must be A4 sized. Kind regards, Alison
