See & Do

Schools & group visits

We welcome schools, colleges and community groups for free guided visits to explore our exhibitions and research library.

Our educational activities make links to our exhibition programme, and provide excellent opportunities for focused and enriching learning experiences.

Temporary closure

The Henry Moore Institute is closed for refurbishment until summer 2024.

Our next research season, ‘Brâncuși and Britain’, will be running off-site from February to June 2024, with online discussions and in-person conferences.

While our galleries are closed, the Archive of Sculptors’ Papers and Sculpture Research Library will open by appointment only.

What you can expect when we reopen

We’re converting one of our current staff meeting spaces into a brand new, multifunctional learning and engagement facility.

We’ll use this to better accommodate school visits, as well as hosting creative workshops, discussions and events.

When we reopen in summer 2024, you’ll find a lot of other improvements to our building:

  • A refreshed area on the ground floor (our ‘alcove’) that allows us to continue to offer free, creative drop-in activities for all visitors.
  • We’ll also continue to offer Explorer Bag for younger visitors.
  • Inclusive, fully accessible toilets with baby changing facilities.
  • A more welcoming entrance area with seating, designed to be a meeting point.
  • Improvements to our shop, with more on offer for younger visitors to inspire making and sculpting.
  • We’ll continue to run free, artist-led creative family workshops during the school holidays in Leeds.

While we are closed

We will be running an off-site research season, ‘Brâncuși and Britain’, from February to June 2024. It will feature online discussions and in-person events that examine Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși’s (1876-1957) life and work from a contemporary viewpoint.

Our engagement programme with schools and community groups will also continue to operate off-site around Leeds. More details on how you can get involved will be posted here soon.

Plan a visit for when we reopen in 2024

Primary and secondary schools

We offer free guided visits for groups of up to 20 pupils, which include a guided tour of our galleries and a short creative activity inspired by the work.

We work in close partnership with our neighbours at Leeds Art Gallery and can run parallel visits for schools, suitable for larger groups.

For secondary schools, we can also provide tours of our library and archive and, for KS5 and FE, run short research activities to familiarize students with our extensive sculpture library.

Colleges & universities

We run free guided tours of our exhibitions for college and university groups for groups of up to 25 students at a time.

We can also provide tours of our sculpture library and archive as part of your visit.

Art Encounters

Art Encounters is a series of free short films for schools with accompanying resources, supporting teachers and learners to think about art.

They invite viewers to discuss first responses to artworks, and learn about the artist and their inspirations.

Each Art Encounter concludes with a creative challenge, which can be used as part of a programme of study, or as a stand-alone activity undertaken in school or at home.
