About the Henry Moore Institute
Experience, study and enjoy sculpture from around the world.
The Institute runs a varied programme of free exhibitions and events, and provides an invaluable sculpture resource for researchers, students and artists.
History of the Institute
The Institute is a part of The Henry Moore Foundation, set up by the sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986) in 1977 to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, especially sculpture.
Past exhibitions
The Institute hosts a varied programme of historical, modern and contemporary sculpture exhibitions.
Michael E. Smith
24 March – 18 June 2023
Main Galleries
Using found objects, Michael E. Smith’s materials are drawn from the global workflow of production-consumption-depletion. They are things that are thoroughly used, discarded, but won’t disappear. They are recognisable in their raw states, and remain so once absorbed into finished sculptures.
The Colour of Anxiety: Race, Sexuality and Disorder in Victorian Sculpture
25 November 2022 – 26 February 2023
Main galleries
The Colour of Anxiety examines objects that introduced colour and new materials into the sculptural process, situating them within the context of the anxiety which often weighed upon Victorian society in the face of social change and scientific advances.
Lungiswa Gqunta: Sleep in Witness
8 July – 30 October 2022
Main Galleries
Sleep in Witness traces the intangible world of dreams as a space of learning where extraordinary, overlooked and discredited places of knowledge are illuminated. The exhibition includes two new installations, Zinodaka and Ntabamanzi, along with the video Gathering 2019.
Architectural design
The design of the exterior of the Institute, facing Victoria Gardens on the Headrow, is tied to the history of this area of Leeds.
