The Notepiece

Charlotte von Poehl

For a month in 2004, Swedish artist Charlotte von Poehl spent her visiting research fellowship at the Henry Moore Institute studying the American artists Eva Hesse and Sol LeWitt.

For von Poehl, the fellowship was an opportunity to spend time thinking and reading about these artists, but it was also a challenge. It meant finding a new way of working - in a library, rather than a studio - and focusing on research over making.

Her solution was to use the library itself as a kind of studio, and to limit her materials to a notebook, some pencils and watercolours. The loose, spontaneous quality of these notes, and their sheer quantity - this catalogue presents just a selection of the hundreds of pages she made - is suggestive of streams of thoughts transferred almost unconsciously to paper.

Produced to accompany Charlotte von Poehl: The Notepiece at the Institute in 2006, this catalogue delves particularly into her work ‘The Notepiece’, presenting over 130 pages from her notebooks. With installation photography of the exhibition, an introduction by Penelope Curtis (Curator of the Henry Moore Institute) and an additional essay:
