Figuring Space: Sculpture/Furniture from Mies to Moore

Description

Figuring Space asks to what extent sculpture and furniture can occupy a similar space in architecture. Focusing on the mid-twentieth century, it is not about a category of furniture by artists that have become familiar, but instead about understanding the roles assigned to sculpture and furniture over the years.

This question of similarity and difference is explicitly confronted by the juxtaposition of Henry Moore’s ‘King and Queen’ with Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chairs. Mie’s use of sculpture in his projects is looked at extensively, as are the echoes of Moore’s sculpture in the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames and Arne Jacobson.
