Gilbert Bayes (1872-1953): From Arts and Crafts to the Light Monumental (No. 23)

Philip Ward-Jackson writes about the archive of sculptor Gilbert Bayes (1872-1953), recently acquired by the Henry Moore Institute's Archive of Sculptors' Papers.

Illustrated by many arresting images of Bayes' work that place them in a wider context, Ward-Jackson essay takes in Bayes' early years at Finsbury college; his time as a student at the Royal Academy, including a travel scholarship to Paris; and his work on monumental and architectural sculpture.

This essay was written to accompany the library display Gilbert Bayes (12 October - 6 November 1998), and an exhibition at The Fine Art Society, London (12 October - 6 November 1998).
