Educational visits

We welcome many schools and colleges every year on our free educational visits. Please read the following information, which will answer many of your questions.

The Henry Moore Foundation is open for educational visits from 30 March to 30 August. Groups are guided around the gardens, studios, galleries and workshops. Appointments can be made for one class (30 pupils) and their adult helpers on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.

It is necessary to provide 1 adult helper to accompany each 5 primary school pupils and 1 adult helper to each 10 senior students. We are very aware of the need to ensure the children's safety whilst also considering the safety of the works on the estate. With this in mind we can accommodate children from year 3 upwards and do not accept bookings for nursery and infant classes.

The guided tour, which starts at 10:30am, takes approximately 1½ hours. The tour is mostly outside therefore visitors must be dressed for the weather.
A class of pupils and their helpers will be split into two smaller groups and a guide will be provided for each group. We ask for adults to accompany pupils in order that our volunteer guides are not asked to supervise.

The tour ends at the visitors' centre where there are picnic tables - some under cover. After lunch pupils may return to the gardens with sketchbooks and cameras as long as they are well supervised. We ask that you leave the estate at 2pm in order to make way for our afternoon visitors.

Educational visits are usually fully booked for the entire season before we open to the public, it is advisable to make an appointment as soon as possible. We accept bookings from 4 January 2010 onwards.There is no charge for educational visits.

There are many safety hazards on the estate, unguarded ponds, steep banks and ditches, etc. You may find it advisable to visit us for a recce and/or risk assessment prior to making your appointment. Risk assessment guidelines are available by clicking on the link to the right.

Two publications that will assist you with pre and/or post visit projects are available from the Henry Moore Foundation, priced at £8 each. An Introduction to Henry Moore provides a general overview of the artist’s life and work, while Hands On! Creative Projects encourages young people to create their own imaginative works employing the tools and materials that Moore himself used. You may purchase these publications by following the links to the right.
