Moore’s fascination with the Reclining Figure lasted from the early 1920s until the end of his life. He described the Mexican Chac-Mool idol as one of the most important influences on his early work of this kind, commenting that it was not only the reclining pose of the figure but it’s sense of weight and massiveness that appealed to him.
Although this sculpture, made when Moore was 84, has a more elongated and sinuous quality than some of his earlier explorations of the theme, traces of the Mexican influence can still be found in the majestic turn of the woman’s head and the solid weight of her legs.
