24

Bronze Edition of 6+1
Cast: Morris Singer, Basingstoke
Height 335.5cm

Acquired 1986
This sculpture appears organic and has an aged and weathered appearance which is complimented with its outdoor setting where the growth and vulnerability of the surrounding flora contrasts with the supposedly ancient and permanently strong-standing 'monument' which appears to have been weathered over time although only created in 1979.
The sculpture is also reminiscent of prehistoric fertility goddesses such as the Venus of Willendorf and is feminine, monumental and majestic, showing a leader gazing over the land from which she grew from.
Moore wrote: "There are universal shapes to which everyone is subconsciously conditioned and to which they can respond if their conscious control does not shut them off. The less articulate, the more mysterious forms the better".
