The Wall: Background for Sculpture 1962 (LH 483) resulted from an experiment, attempted by Moore, to resolve the challenge of placing sculpture within an architectural setting. The wall was intended as a background for a sculpture, which would form a visual barrier between the art and the architecture. It is closely related to a number of smaller works made in the late 1950s of figures seated in front of walls. In each case the flat surface of the wall was broken up by the inclusion of holes and strong textured areas; in some examples the walls were tilted and curved dramatically. While this idea worked on a small scale, the sculptures when enlarged were more successful without a walled background, so Moore abandoned the idea.
