This Henry Moore Sheep exhibition, curated by the Foundation's Suzanne Eustace was opened by Robert Halfon MP at the Gibberd Gallery at Harlow’s Civic Centre on 29th on July.

The Gibberd Gallery, open free of charge to visitors, is home to the Frederick Gibberd Collection of British Watercolours and Drawings, started in 1977 with Sir Frederick Gibberd's gift to Harlow Council of ten pictures from his personal collection. The Gallery also hosts a series of temporary exhibitions as well as activities including the popular Saturday Art Club.

The Henry Moore Foundation has loaned several works to this exhibition, including sixteen of Henry Moore’s much-loved sheep. The selection for this venue has been enhanced to include drawings related to this subject, and Working Model For Sheep Piece (LH 626) and etching tools, as well as related found objects.

Henry Moore’s representations of sheep are among the most popular of his works, surprising and delighting those familiar with this body of work, and first time visitors alike. He sketched the animals as they grazed in the fields surrounding his Hertfordshire studios, and they even inspired his monumental bronze sculpture Sheep Piece 1971-72 (LH 627), which can be seen by visiting The Henry Moore Foundation at Perry Green.  (Call 01279 843 333 to book your visit there, closes 30 August).

The exhibition in Harlow runs at the same time as a 'Summertime Sheep Trail' organised by Richard Dennery, Harlow's Town Centre Manager.
