Visitors to Saffron Walden Museum are enjoying Henry Moore Sheep, which runs until 21 February. This award winning venue is run by Uttlesford District Council and the Saffron Walden Museum Society. The Henry Moore Foundation is delighted to loan works to this exhibition including sixteen of Henry Moore’s much-loved sheep etchings together with a selection of related sculpture and found objects. Historic documents from the Museum’s own collection will also be on display exploring the past relationship between the town, sheep and the saffron trade.
Henry Moore’s representations of sheep are among the most popular of his works, surprising and delighting those discovering them for the first time. He sketched the animals as they grazed in the fields surrounding his Hertfordshire studios, and they even inspired his monumental bronze sculpture Sheep Piece 1971-72 (LH 627), which can be seen by visiting the Henry Moore Foundation at Perry Green.
The exhibition will go on tour to two further regional venues, first travelling to Hertford Museum where it will be the first exhibition following a major refurbishment programme, and then on to the Gibberd Gallery at Harlow’s Civic Centre as part of their 2010 summer programme.
