Imaginary mazes workshop

Dungeons and dragons maze

Dungeons and dragons maze

The inspiration for this workshop came from Moore’s Stone Maze: Project for Hill Monument 1977, a plaster cast of beef bones arranged like a maze, which was on display as part of  the Imaginary Landscapes exhibition in the Sheep Field Barn. Although it was only a few centimetres high, Moore had it photographed so that it appeared monumental.

The day began with a tour of the gallery, grounds and studios, looking at the change in scale from small plaster maquettes to monumental bronzes, thinking about sculpture as landscape and walking around and through one of Moore’s largest sculptures as if it were a maze. Participants also got to see Moore's Stone Maze: Project for Hill Monument 1977

Returning to the Aisled Barn, participants constructed mazes from a range of found objects and every day materials, bringing them to life with a lavish dose of imagination. The finished results were populated with people, animals, insects and dragons to give a sense of scale and, at the end of the session, each maze was photographed to make them seem life size.
