Exhibition

Mezzanine, Leeds Art Gallery

Curated by Jyrki Suikonen.

University of Leeds Gregory fellow Jyrki Suikonen marked his time in Leeds by selecting the work of four Finnish colleagues to make a small show about how sculpture reveals time, and the different ways that different countries understand time and space. The four artists - Lauri Anttila, Jussi Heikkila, Markku Kivnen, Marko Vuokola - who come from different backgrounds and age-groups, came to Leeds to install their work themsleves. Finland is amuch larger andemptier country than Englad, and this must afect the way that artists represent the time it takes to travel throguh it. The four works on show give a sense of different ways of measuring time and space, whether in the city or in the countryside.

'We think about humanity in terms of time: our working day and our free time, our youth and old age. Biological, intellectual and social development can all be understood within this kind of temporal reckoning. The works of these Finnish artists from three different generations reflect the conception of time and natural space in their home country.' Jyrki Siukonen
