Specifically aimed at groups of students beginning the new academic year in the company of course tutors, the Open Day begins at 2.30 pm with a schedule of talks and tours from Henry Moore Institute staff, concluding with a keynote lecture at 6 pm by artist Nathaniel Mellors in Leeds Art Gallery Lecture Theatre.

Our Academic Open Day introduces tutors and students to the Henry Moore Institute, a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture in the heart of Leeds. An award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre, library and sculpture archive, the Institute hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences and lectures, as well as developing research and publications, to expand the understanding and scholarship of historical and contemporary sculpture.

The Institute is a part of The Henry Moore Foundation, which was set up by Moore in 1977 to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, especially sculpture. We are open seven days a week from 10 am-5.30 pm, with the galleries and library open until 9 pm on Wednesdays. The library opens at 1 pm on Sundays.

If you are a tutor or a student with an interest in sculpture, this is the ideal introduction to the Institute and an opportunity to find out how our resources and academic events can enhance your work.  The Open Day features behind-the-scenes tours of our exhibitions, collections, library and archive, as well as an introduction to our forthcoming events and research programme.

Keynote Open Day lecture by artist Nathaniel Mellors

Friday 14 October 2011 6 pm
Leeds Art Gallery Lecture Theatre

This talk is free and open to all, booking is not necessary

Nathaniel Mellors’ sculptures and films employ theatrical, mechanical, musical and fictive strategies to test the limits of language and to analyse systems of power. His absurdist and humorous narratives employ harsh satire and celebrate the grotesque to ask questions of assumptions – be they of art or the surrounding world.

Mellors teaches at Leeds Met University and has exhibited his work internationally, including group and solo shows including the ICA (2011), The British Art Show 7 (2011), Tate Britain (2009), South London Gallery (2009), Stedelijk Museum CS, Amsterdam, (2008) and Lyon Biennial (2007).
