For three months, in the Spring of 1994, Jaume Plensa's Personal Miraculous Fountain transformed the Henry Moore Foundation Studio in Halifax into a place of pilgrimage. In the first room, his installation documenting the names of the men and women who worked at Dean Clough during the 19th Century and the new diseases associated specifically with the industrial age. In the second room, the fountain, a sacred shrine, with water emerging continously. Scientific rationalism on the causes of death is combined with the older yearning for cleansing and transformation through superstition.
