This volume is a magnificent illustrated record of Henry Moore's sculpture in the ten years from the beginning of 1955 to the end of 1964. It reveals a remarkable development in style and a richness and grandeur of production. It forms part of the definitive work on Henry Moore's sculpture, cataloguing every piece made by him in this period. It thus provides an eloquent combination of outstanding reproduction and thorough scholarship.
The first edition of this volume appeared in 1965. This second edition (1986) has been completely revised. Sir Herbert Read's introduction and the remainder of the text material (biographical note, lists of exhibitions and bibliography) originally assembled by Alan Bowness, the editor, have been preserved, but, with the assistance of David Mitchinson, the opportunity has been seized to update the catalogue to take account of changes and discoveries during the last two decades and almost every piece is now illustrated alongside its catalogue entry.
The opportunity has also been taken to introduce a number of new photographs and to revise completely the layout of the plate section. Almost all the photographs were originally taken by the sculptor, or under his supervision. Important works are shown in the plate section, often from several viewpoints and in detail, and this provides a total of over 250 illustrations.
