A plaque commemorating the time Henry Moore lived and worked in Adie Road, Hammersmith, at 3 Grove Studios, will be unveiled by his daughter Mary Moore on Wednesday 25th March 2009 at 12 noon.
There will be short talks from the following people: Angela Dixon, Chairman of the Hammersmith and Fulham Historic Buildings Group, Henry Gentle, current studio occupier, Richard Calvocoressi, Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, and Mary Moore, the artist's daughter.
Henry Moore lived and worked at 3 Grove Studios (now called the Laboratory) between 1924 and 1928. He moved here after completing his training at Leeds School of Art. During his time in Hammersmith he taught at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington and attended Leon Underwood’s Brook Green School of Art in nearby Girdlers Road. Among several works carved here are Mother and Child* 1924-5, now in Manchester City Art Gallery, and Woman with Upraised Arms* 1927, now in the collection of The Henry Moore Foundation. (*photos available see below.)
Henry Gentle, the existing occupier of the studio said: ‘It is a daily pleasure to be working in a studio with such a distinguished history. I have always wanted to commemorate the time Henry Moore spent here. I have been delighted to work with the Historic Buildings Group to achieve this and I hope people will enjoy knowing that this is where Henry Moore started his career.’
Angela Dixon, Chairman of the HBG said: ‘Our Borough has many interesting buildings associated with famous people and events but passers by often don’t know their history. Henry Moore started his career in our Borough in this studio in Adie Road and we are delighted to help commemorate this. The Borough is lucky to have a later Henry Moore sculpture, a half-size working model of his celebrated commission for the Lincoln Arts Center in New York, Reclining Figure (made 1962-5), for which Moore himself selected the location, in the pool at the entrance to Charing Cross Hospital for all to enjoy.’

The Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings Group
The Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings Group works to promote, record, preserve and enhance Hammersmith and Fulham’s historic environment. This includes not just historic buildings and structures of all types but also open spaces, parks and gardens, landscape and views, the Thames and the Grand Union Canal.
We get involved in lots of different activities, including commenting on proposals affecting historic buildings, conservation areas and open spaces, appearing at planning enquiries, contributing in detail to the council’s conservation area profiles, proposing buildings for statutory listing, making representations to the mayor and government on policy and legislative matters and working with other groups on major issues such as developments at the Town Hall and White City and the restoration of Fulham Palace and its grounds.
Our publications include a Local List of Historic Buildings and an audit of public sculpture in the Borough
We are a voluntary organisation with no income other than what we can raise from membership subscriptions and fund-raising activities. We are actively seeking ways to increase our membership and our income so that we can achieve more on behalf of the borough's historic environment and the people of the borough. We are delighted to hear from anyone who wants to help us in our work in any capacity.
The Historic Buildings Group has worked closely with the Borough’s Conservation Team to establish a standard design for plaques in the Borough to commemorate historic houses, events or people. This first was on St Vincent’s Care home in Queen Caroline Street W6 and this is the second to be unveiled.
