2003

Preface by Penelope Curtis.
Essays by Jonathan Blackwood & Matthew Withey, Robert Burstow, Ann Compton, Sarah Crellin, Martina Droth, Simon Ford, Margaret Garlake, David Getsy, Claire Glossop, Tony Godfrey, Nigel Halliday, Valerie Holman, Catherine Kinley, Sue Malvern, Joy Sleeman, Chris Stephens, Andrew Stephenson, Andrea Tarsia, Anne Wagner, and Gillian Whiteley.

The twenty authors in this book represent some of the most significant scholarship in the field of British sculpture studies. Some are established scholars, some have just begun to make their mark on the area, while others would not even think of themselves as working in this field. All this is deliberate: we hope this book will help to take the history of sculpture into the history of art, which has itself long since moved to embrace a much wider cultural history. We are grateful to our contributors for taking on an unconventional project, and for agreeing to write to the titles for which they were commissioned, rather than the essays which they might themselves have chosen to deliver.
